Exhibition ‘The history of Spain in the Volvo Ocean Race’ in Alicante
The exhibition gathers the history of the ships and the experience of Spanish sailors in the toughest sailing competition going, the Volvo Ocean Race , since it hoisted its sails for the first time 45 years.
From the Spanish pioneers, who competed in foreign boats in the second edition in 1977-78, to the MAPFRE crew in the last race, the exhibition includes a selection of photographs and historical objects that reflect the great importance of Spain in the history of sailing around the world.
The exhibition gathers photographs, many unpublished courtesy of their protagonists, and an exclusive selection of legendary objects, each with a story behind, such as the rudder of a ship that broke in the middle of the Atlantic swell, sailors sunglasses reinforced with hand sewn leather, sextants used to calculate the position of a boat or navigation charts with the original route notes and points where a man fell into the water.
Visit this free exhibition at the Volvo Ocean Race Museum, in Alicante’s bustling port area. You can also visit the rest of the museum, a modern space equipped with interactive elements, games, a regatta “Ride” simulator and the boat ‘Brazil 1’, which you can go on board. An ideal family day out.
