This is a traditional Costa Blanca event that takes place on this festive day. Families and friends go to the countryside or outdoors to enjoy their ‘mona’ or traditional sweet snack together.
The ‘mona de pascua’ or Easter cake is a roll made of flour, egg, sugar and salt with an incrused hard-boiled egg. It is only eaten once a year, as its name suggests, on Easter Monday.
There are currently many varieties of this traditional ‘mona de pascua’ including those in the shape of crocodiles or lizards, braided or made of chocolate. But they all have in common the hard boiled painted egg, why? Because it is also tradition, before eating the egg, to crack it on someone else’s forehead!
