The 37th edition of this theatre festival takes place at different venues in the Valencian town of Sagunto from 4 August to 5 September.

This year, nearly 40 performances of scenic and musical arts are programmed, more than half of them by Valencian companies.

This weekend, 17-19 January, marks the celebration of this festivity in many Costa Blanca towns.

One of the most curious traits of this festival, also known as San Antón, is the blessings of pets and other animals.

Fire also plays a key role with mascletás (load explosions), fireworks and bonfires. In addition, music, parades and traditional meals are a must in the celebrations.

Among the many celebrations, the ones in Canals, Valencia, Alicante, Mutxamel, Sagunto, Benissa, Pego, Teulada and Villena stand out.

Sagunto celebrates a month of activities starting on September 4, the day in which our Roman past is commemorated.

The aim of the event is to highlight our Roman heritage. This is not just archaeological remains but has influenced our language and customs.

Various activities have been scheduled such as exhibitions, workshops, historical recreations or conferences.

This comic festival held in the Port of Sagunto’s Casal Jove is on from 22 to 24 March.

This is the sixth edition of ‘Splash’; a unique comic festival that this year has over 30 stands with a combination of publishers, bookstores and fanzines. For the occasion some well-known national and international artists will be there such as German comic artist Isabel Kreitz.

Apart from the many stands ‘Splash 2019’ includes exhibitions, documentaries and films for all ages, workshops for the youngest, musical performances and shows such as that of the Italian artist Leo Bassi. Non stop entertainment!

Entrance is free of charge, until the venue is full, except for the Leo Bassi show which has a small of EUR 7.

17 January marks the day this celebration takes place in many Costa Blanca towns.

During the festival all types of pets are blessed, this is followed by mascletás, fireworks bonfires, music, parades and traditional food.

Some towns that celebrate this are:

Canals (from 16 to 18 January)

To mark this date, one of the highest bonfires in the world (standing at around 18 metres) is set up in front of the church of the municipality. This bonfire is burnt on 16 January followed by a parade with ‘festeros’ on horseback handing out thousands of toys.

Valencia (from 16 to 17 January)

To conmemorate this day, Valencia’s Sagunt neighbourhood organises a popular food market and a traditional animal parade. The previous day at 21.30 a bonfire will also be burnt.

Alicante (from 18 to 20 January)

Alicante will hold a traditional fair with ‘porrate’ stalls (an outdoor traditional product fair). The fair will be installed around the Plaza de Toros. Animals will receive a traditional blessing and there will also be parades, paellas, costume contests, chocolatada and horse riding exhibitions.

Mutxamel (from 19 to 20 January)

The festival starts of on 19 January with children’s games, parades and correfocs. Animals will receive a traditional blessing on 20 January followed by parades, horse rides, food tasting, raffles, mascletá and fireworks.

Sagunto (from 18 to 20 January)

There will be a whole series of performances, children’s games, animation, correfocs, parades, concerts and a bonfire in the town’s Plaza Mayor.

Benissa (from 18 to 20 January)

In addition to a traditional market (‘porrat’) and animal blessings, the town hosts a livestock fair, a fun fair and a very complete set of cultural and sport activities.

Villena (from 17 to 20 January)

Festivities take place around the Emita de San Antón, with a traditional parade and blessing of animals, food, tastings, gymkhana all wrapped up with a concert.
