Open until February 28, 2022, find this unique exhibition ‘Especias, el universo del sabor’ (Spices, a world of flavours) at the Sede de la Universidad in Benissa.

Senses will be awakened as visitors discover the cosmetic and medicinal value of culinary herbs and spices and how then can transform food flavours, colours and aromas.

The exhibition occupies 300 m2 including six sections with explanatory panels surrounded by plants and ready-to-use spices.

The market is held every second Saturday of the month, from 9:00 to 14:00, in the Plaza Jaume I in Benissa.

This market offers a place for producers to offer their products km 0 or seasonal and locally produced products directly.  An  impulse for a responsible and sustainable consumption.

In the “Mercat dels Porxes” you can find organic products such as fruit and vegetables, bread, cheese, sausages, honey, oil, wine and craft beer. You can also find handmade products such as ceramics, soaps, bracelets and jewellery.

This weekend, 17-19 January, marks the celebration of this festivity in many Costa Blanca towns.

One of the most curious traits of this festival, also known as San Antón, is the blessings of pets and other animals.

Fire also plays a key role with mascletás (load explosions), fireworks and bonfires. In addition, music, parades and traditional meals are a must in the celebrations.

Among the many celebrations, the ones in Canals, Valencia, Alicante, Mutxamel, Sagunto, Benissa, Pego, Teulada and Villena stand out.

The fair has interesting things to do or see on over these days being a funfair, livestock fair, medieval market, exhibitions, cinema, music, competitions and sporting activities.

The medieval market closes the programme of activities. For two days historic centre streets will be filled with stalls with craft products, amazing food, Arabic souk, thematic exhibitions, traditional trade workshops, performances set in the medieval time and parades. For the little ones there will be a play area with workshops as well as puppet shows.

17 January marks the day this celebration takes place in many Costa Blanca towns.

During the festival all types of pets are blessed, this is followed by mascletás, fireworks bonfires, music, parades and traditional food.

Some towns that celebrate this are:

Canals (from 16 to 18 January)

To mark this date, one of the highest bonfires in the world (standing at around 18 metres) is set up in front of the church of the municipality. This bonfire is burnt on 16 January followed by a parade with ‘festeros’ on horseback handing out thousands of toys.

Valencia (from 16 to 17 January)

To conmemorate this day, Valencia’s Sagunt neighbourhood organises a popular food market and a traditional animal parade. The previous day at 21.30 a bonfire will also be burnt.

Alicante (from 18 to 20 January)

Alicante will hold a traditional fair with ‘porrate’ stalls (an outdoor traditional product fair). The fair will be installed around the Plaza de Toros. Animals will receive a traditional blessing and there will also be parades, paellas, costume contests, chocolatada and horse riding exhibitions.

Mutxamel (from 19 to 20 January)

The festival starts of on 19 January with children’s games, parades and correfocs. Animals will receive a traditional blessing on 20 January followed by parades, horse rides, food tasting, raffles, mascletá and fireworks.

Sagunto (from 18 to 20 January)

There will be a whole series of performances, children’s games, animation, correfocs, parades, concerts and a bonfire in the town’s Plaza Mayor.

Benissa (from 18 to 20 January)

In addition to a traditional market (‘porrat’) and animal blessings, the town hosts a livestock fair, a fun fair and a very complete set of cultural and sport activities.

Villena (from 17 to 20 January)

Festivities take place around the Emita de San Antón, with a traditional parade and blessing of animals, food, tastings, gymkhana all wrapped up with a concert.

“Tot Vall de Pop 2018” is on from 1 to 9 December. Different towns from this valley located in the Marina Alta de Alicante will take part.

Vall de Pop comprises the municipalities of Benigembla, Murla, Parcent and Alcalalí, where the valley opens up and the municipalities of Xaló, Llíber, Senija and Benissa, nearer the coast.

This is the tenth year this event takes place and it will have a complete programme of activities, promoting local food, wine and the area.

Gastronomy
Food from this area is authentic and includes local sausages, rice broths and traditional stews. Local restaurants will offer special menus during the days of the event.
There will also be a special market on called Mercat de la Terra de Xaló, dedicated to local sausages.

Wines
The three main bodegas in the area (Xaló, Parcent and Gutiérrrez de la Vega) will open their doors offering visitors guided tours and tastings.

Countryside
There will be two guided routes through Alcalalí and the Pla de Petracos.
