Visit Chocolates Valor in Villajoyosa (Alicante) and learn about its history: where did cocoa used to come from or how the process to make chocolate has evolved.

The visit begins in an exhibition room dedicated to cocoa, followed by a projection in the audiovisual room; it continues with a visit to the Chocolate Museum and a panoramic view of the inside of the factory; it ends with a chocolate tasting in the shop.

Visits are free of charge, get your free entry tickets from an automatic dispenser at the entrance. Occasionally entrance times may vary, this is due to peaks of visitors that may happen in Easter, long weekends or August.

Timetables (the capacity is limited to 20 people in each visit)

• Monday to Friday: 11:00, 11:30, 12:00, 12:30, 13:00, 17:00, 17:30, 18:00, 18:30 and 19:00 (spanish).

The festival, declared of International Tourist Interest, takes place 24 to 31 July in La Vila Joiosa (Alicante).

The ‘Moors and Christians’ festivities are the town’s most important festivities. They recreate the battle of 1538, when the Berber pirates attacked and landed in the city.

Many activities for all take place such as parades, the entrance of bands, music concerts, gastronomic competitions and fireworks.

But without a doubt the most important event is the landing that takes place on Sunday 28 July.

The tournament on from 24 to 26 May take place in Villajoyosea at the Estadio de Rugby de Villajoyosa.

A total of 24 teams, 16 in the men’s category and 8 in the women’s category, compete in this 33rd edition of this seven-a-side rugby tournament.

The men’s teams are from Poland, Hungary and Finland, the women’s teams from France, Poland, Belgium and Finland, although there will also be many mixed nationality teams taking part.

Tickets to watch the Saturday and Sunday games tickets cost EUR 15 euros (or EUR 10 per day) and are free for children under 12; on Friday access is free for everyone.

‘Slaves of Beauty. Dress and personal adornment’. Using archaeological pieces found in Villajoyosa, this exhibition explores dress, image and personal care in different cultures of antiquity.

Around 150 Phoenician, Greek, Punic, Egyptian, Iberian and Roman pieces, over 110 on exhibition for the first time, will remain in Vilamuseu until April 2020.

Some pieces are of great archaeological value such as a magnificent Greek terracotta, Iberian glasses used that the warriors of Poble Nou used to drink, an Egyptian alabaster perfume bottle, a Greek bottle of perfumed oil in the shape of a human foot or a Phoenician guttus in the shape of a mallard.

See how fabrics, fibres and dyes were made and used for dresses, how people pampered themselves with cosmetics and make-up, different hairstyles or jewellery and ornaments used by the wealthiest.

Screens placed strategically along the route offer virtual recreations of the public baths of Allon, the Roman city of Villajoyosa, the process of doing a woman’s hair in the time of Emperor Augustus or a tutorial on how to put on a Roman toga.

Visit a recreation of a room in an Iberian house including a vertical loom, probably the most faithful replica of an antique loom exhibited in Spain today.

This exhibition offers a sensory itinerary, where visitors may touch, smell or even wear different articles such as fabrics, replicas of dresses and perfumes.

The Bou Ferrer underwater archeological site is the only one of its type in Spain open to the public.

In the site is a Roman wreck Bou Ferrer, a large Roman merchant ship shipwrecked between the year 64 and 68 (first century AD) in front of the the town of Villajoiosa’s beach (Alicante).

The ship is in an amazing state of conservation, the shipload, its hull and its large dimensions and the depth it is at (around 25 metres under water and just 1,000 metres from the coast), make it an exceptional underwater archaeological site, unparalleled today.

Visits offer divers the opportunity to contemplate a large merchant ship that is over 30 metres long, 9 metres wide, weighs almost 230 tons and that at the time it sunk was carrying over 200 tons of merchandise; a mixture of amphoras of fish sauce and lead ingots.

The culture section of the Generalitat must authorize diving visits which can only be done certified divers. Prior reservation is required and technical staff must direct all dives.

Excavation campaigns have brought to the surface 230 amphoras of the more than 2,000 that were on the wreck. Everything brought up to the surface can be seen at Vilamuseu, the Municipal Museum of Villajoyosa, at an area called the ‘Taller del Bou Ferrer y la Navegación Antigua’. An interesting area where work is done to publicise the site and support underwater visits for this pioneering underwater archaeological project, also open to people with disabilities.

Villajoyosa lives overturned to the sea. It seems that the nearby mountains drove it to its sweet destination, next to the calm waters of the Mediterranean.

La Caleta and its surrounding Cala Charco and Racó del Conill constitute a mosaic of more or less inaccessible places and this unique stretch of coast.

La Caleta is the closest to the well-known urbanization called Montíboli. Next to the small beach is one of the best known luxury hotels of Villajoyosa.

Towards the south, next to the Torre del Xarco is the namesake cove, competing in beauty and gaining in quiet to his located sisters to the north of Montiboli: Bon Nou and Paraís beaches.

If we are still willing to bet harder we can win with enjoyment for the senses than the small and abrupt coves of the Racó del Conill and Cala Fonda. The beach is located about three kilometers from the urban area in the north, towards Benidorm. It is difficult to access what almost guarantees a bath alone on a stormy cliff coast.
