Gone are the abrupt reliefs of the Betic foothills and the cliffed coast of the province of Alicante; the confines of the province and the Costa Blanca itself to the south are less abrupt, with the horizon, the beach and the coastline fighting each other in a war without end that deposits the sands that the rivers transport and the winds accumulate in dunes .

Las Higuericas, in the municipality of Pilar de la Horadada, can show off a dune cord perhaps somewhat residual, but nowadays well cared for, where the visitor can walk without his mere presence damaging it, with sinuous wooden footbridges and long itineraries away from the more or less large agglomerations that in this coastal stretch materialize in the well-known as, Las Villas, in the north and, El Mojón, in the south.

Agriculture still competes for land near the sea with the building desire and this unequal departure leaves curious landscapes of crops, always productive, ordered, harmonious that give way to the coveted sands and finally to the sea.

Punta Prima is a small rocky ledge that ends at an almost straight angle; Cabo Roig is a rounded protuberance whose lee is the huge urbanization that bears the name of this geographical feature.

The Cala Capitán is marked by a small rocky islet that determines the abundance of calms in the small cove: singular but well populated with the numerous people of the nearby buildings. The beach is embraced by a long promenade that constitutes its maximum attraction.

Towards the north we find other small coves such as Cala El Bosque or Cala Cerrada before arriving at Cala Mosca, located in the coastal area of the urbanization called Playa Flamenca which also gives name to another small cove. Cala Mosca is the natural exit of a small ravine and its small dimensions make it familiar, protected and endowed with excellent services.

The fortification, which at the time was a path for prayer and holy war, was inhabited by warrior monks and today is in the process of restoration and excavation. Its strategic location connects it with other Mediterranean fortifications such as the one existing in Tunisia and makes it one of the best preserved in the Islamic West, as well as the oldest.

Along with this travel through history we can perhaps plunge into loneliness in the more than four kilometers of exceptionally well preserved beach and let ourselves be carried away by the history of which we are part, rocked and cradled by the waves in an unforgettable environment.

From the Cape of Santa Pola and more specifically from its lighthouse, one can dream of distant marine voyages, visit the Island of Tabarca as a bird’s eye or peer into the distant capital of the province, the city of Alicante, plunged into its bustle.

On the slopes of the mountain that forms this rather rounded cape, there is a length of unique beaches in its landscape, with stretches with few agglomerations and not always equipped with all the services or the expected accesses, but impressive, special and beautiful.

From the saltworks of Santa Pola located to the south of the cape to the north and declared a Natural Park, the opportunities for intimacy with the sea, the sand, the rock and the splendid climate are varied.

Thus we find the Pinet beach, surrounded by dunes and a salt exploitation visible from away by the huge mountains of salt that glisten in the distance: the paradise of the phoenix, flamingos, which rises from its own ashes; the Egyptian sacred bird par excellence; the domain of anatids and waders.

From the lighthouse towards the north but transiting the shore of the sea is the cala de l’Aljup, decorated in the sky by the color of a multitude of paragliders that catapulted from the top of the sierra looking for a happy landing at the edge of the sea.

In what was a small island or rocky outcrop or connected to the mainland are the Baños de la Reina: a magnificently restored example of an archaeological site of diverse chronology showing the settlements of the cultures and civilizations that go from the Bronze Age, to the Iberian or Roman ascription. The warehouses with houses gave way to thermal baths, small temples, curious fishponds excavated in the stone; a concentration of vestiges in such a small area that is unparalleled on our coasts and reminds us of what our lands were a long time ago, a vehicle of merchandise, cultures and peoples that have made us as we are. The journey to the past and the return to the present and the future are made here in a few square meters and the sea, as a witness of all this, exacerbates the enjoyment of the senses.

If we are still willing to bet harder we can win with enjoyment for the senses than the small and abrupt coves of the Racó del Conill and Cala Fonda. The beach is located about three kilometers from the urban area in the north, towards Benidorm. It is difficult to access what almost guarantees a bath alone on a stormy cliff coast.

Although the islands are by definition enclaves that cost us to reach, the island returns us with effort, because in very few square meters it collects the essence of a part of our history and in it, time seems to stop or jump to the past when we turn a corner. The island, or rather the sea that surrounds it, constitutes a marine reserve of great value that helps to preserve the most valuable fisheries for future generations.
Nobody should escape the attraction and the charm that the Tabarca Island exerts from the sea.

Sport diving is another possibility, always complying with current regulations.

The tour of the island on foot is a delight that can be tried once and so, with the toned body and appetite awake, letting yourself be wanting for any of the many places that end up conquering us from the smells of the always fresh and abundant local fishing.

The south cove is located on the other side of the small port where the boats coming from Alicante or Santa Pola come mainly; the barges make the entertaining crossing of the barely five kilometers that separate the island from the coast. You can also use the fast and always efficient boat-taxis, which from Santa Pola make the trip in very small groups and more familiar environment than the temporarily crowded barges.

During the summer there are many establishments where you can taste the always tasty squid, sardines or, of course, the traditional rock fish rices where rice reserves the essence of our Mediterranean.

The beach is small and protected and, by its orientation, generally of calm and crystalline, blue-green waters.

But also the town keeps secrets well hidden when, tired of going up and down between anonymous characters, we need a while not only alone but of mere quiet.

The Serra Gelada is the main natural bastion of Benidorm, today with the consideration of the Costa Blanca Natural Park. The cala Tío Ximo is located on the east end of the Levante beach as an aperitif of the rugged and indomitable mountain range.

The small cove has a small open air restaurant installed in season in the small but attractive cove of sand and stone which is accessed from the Rincón de Loix.

Further to the east is the Punta de la Escaleta and from here to the north, huge limestone walls serve as rooms for hundreds of gulls that scan their territories from the steep limestone. Towards the north, at the end of the mountain range that looks out on Altea, the Albir lighthouse still guides the nightly journeys of countless boats that cross this steep coast in search of a good fishing or better or more calm waters for that splendid bath that closes the summer.
