‘Luzia’, a spectacular Cirque du Soleil production, starts on 14 July until 21 August. Its iconic tent will be installed at San Juan Beach in Alicante.

‘Luzia’ is a feast of light and rain. It is a show full of imagination, vibrant and visually surprising, integrating for the first time water as an artistic element.

The production is freely inspired by Mexico staging different places in the country as well as faces and sounds. Through fresh and hypnotic stunt numbers, ‘Luzia’ takes traditional and contemporary circus disciplines up to another level.

Over the next few days strong icy polar winds will cause a sharp drop in temperatures.

On Thursday, almost all localities will reach sub-zero temperatures and by Friday lighter winds will give place to even colder nights.

High risk areas are the southern inland part of Valencia and the northern inland part of Alicante. However, this time, due to clear skies no snowfall is foreseen, at least that is along the coast.

This cold spell may last until Sunday, with temperatures expected to rise, although in some inland areas temperatures could still be close to zero degrees the rest of the week.

Authorities caution people to wear appropiate clothing and footwear, to be careful with stoves and to take precaution driving.

Although figures were the second best in the last ten years, they went down over three points compared to last year.

According to hotel management data (Hosbec), the data for 2018 reflect an average occupancy of 78%, similar to 2017 and in both cases well above occupancy of previous years.

This slight decrease was the same for all categories of hotels in almost all localities. As in previous years, Finestrat had the highest occupancy rate, followed by Calpe and Alfaz del Pi.

By months, February, November and December were the ones that increased the most, revealing a tendency to visit the Costa Blanca as a winter tourist destination too

The country of origin of most visitors was Spain with 56.6% and a growth of 0.9%. The United Kingdom maintains second place with 14.5% of the market, but falling by 0.7%. The rest of the main country of origins to visit Spain continue previous year trends in decreasing order: Norway, Belgium, Holland, France, Germany, Sweden, Poland, Italy and Russia.

The avenue ‘Alameda’ will change its name to ‘Alameda Camilo Sesto’ in an act of homage to the artist

This inauguration will take place on 28 November, two years after Alcoy City Council awarded the artist with a ‘Gold Medal’ and proclaimed him ‘Hijo predilecto de la ciudad’ (Alcoy’s favourite son).

The tribute, which coincides with the release of his latest album, will begin with two screenings of a documentary about his life at the Calderón Theater and end at 21:00 in the Roselada area where Camilo Sesto will inaugurate a plaque in his name.

According to the Agencia Estatal de Meteorología (Aemet), the provinces of Alicante and Valencia are going to suffer an “episode of intense, generalized and persistent rains and storms”, begining this Thursday and lasting at least until Sunday.

This Thursday, the level of alert is ‘orange’ (dangerous weather situation with possible damage and injuries), for inland and coast of Valencia and Alicante. This means that some activities may be affected and those done outdoors interrupted.

On Friday the situation looks better in Alicante, although the level of alert stays at ‘orange’ in Valencia.

It is expected that the bulk of this ‘gota fria’ will hit the province of Alicante on Saturday with heavy rain and storms for hours each time.

Sunday looks better, with the heavy rains and storms heading to the West of the Peninsula.

Authorities urge people not to take unnecessary risks and to remain alert, keeping an eye on any weather updates.

The sale of prime homes (over 200 m2 and 3+ bedrooms) increased in Spain’s main holiday destinations (except Catalonia due to its political situation), according to data from real estate agency Lucas Fox specialized in luxury properties.

International buyers, mainly from the United Kingdom (despite Brexit), France, the United States and Scandinavia have recovered interest in the Costa Blanca as per data from the first six months of 2018.

This boom is mainly due to the fact that investors find high profitability in this segment of the real estate market. In addition, the expansive situation in which the Spanish economy finds itself, has helped to increase interest in the prime market of coastal areas, more traditionally focused on second homes.

In the Valencian region, sales increased by 10% and property values went up 24% compared to the same period last year.

According to data provided by Hosbec, Benidorm has managed to save the summer season thanks to Spanish and Portuguese tourists. This summer, hotel occupancy in Benidorm stood at 91.47%; a moderate drop of half a point compared to August 2017.

On the other side of the scale is the British market (33 % of the total), which continues drop due to various factors such as less flights and this summer’s hot UK weather that gave place to ‘staycation’ (holidays at home).

August’s bank holiday boosted occupancy rates to this year’s best in the second part of August.

By provinces, the number of international tourists in Alicante dropped as ‘borrowed’ ones chose to summer again in Turkey, Egypt and Tunisia as they recover stability.

Valencia’s occupancy rate hit a high especially at top market hotels (4 and 5 stars).

Overall, income from tourisim in Costa Blanca’s main tourist destinations continues to increase (average 8%) contributing 11 % to Spain’s GDP.
